Professor Computer Science and Digital Media
University of Bremen (Germany)
Professor Friedrich has a chair for Computer Science and Digital Media at the University of Bremen
(Germany) since more than 20 years. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Guangdong University of
Technology in Guangzhou (Canton) / China and a former Visiting Professor at Keio University in
Tokyo / Japan. Before he joined the University of Bremen he worked as a researcher at the University of Dortmund and the Free University of Berlin.
Professor Friedrich studied Information and Communication Technology (Computer Science) and got
a Master Degree from the Technical University of Aachen. Later he studied Economics and Social
Sciences in Berlin where he received his PhD.
His specialities in research and teaching are:

Usability and accessibility of computer systems, especially web applications

e-Learning (Digital Media in education and training)

Knowledge management systems, especially in public administration

Computer-supported cooperative work, virtual communities

Mobile systems
.
Computers and society (social impact of computing), privacy
Currently, he is director of 5 research projects with a total budget of 300 000 Euro per year.

Director of the Department of Digital Media at the
Center for Computing Technologies, Bremen
Prof. Friedrich is a former Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. He is the founder of the international study programme in Digital Media (Bachelor and Master degree courses) with
about 25 partner universities all over the world. Since eight years he is a member of the Academic
Senate, the highest decision making board of the University of Bremen. (The University of Bremen is
one of the top ten research universities in Germany.)
He is an advisor to many ministries on the state and the federal level, in Germany as well as in
Europe. Until 2006 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of a Multimedia Enterprise which is
number 10 in Germany. He is very much engaged in transferring science from theory to practice.
